"Pez de Abril" and "Nadir" Tie on Points on Day 1 at 36 Copa del Rey MAPFRE
Today was the start of 36 Copa del Rey MAPFRE at Club Real Nautico de Palma (RCNP) in Palma de Mallorca (ESP). Nine Swan 42s are competing in One Design; another three in the BMW ORC 1 Division. Two races were held today with winds uncharacteristically lightening up for Race 2.
In Race 1 Jose Maria Meseguer’s PEZ DE ABRIL (ESP) was the winner and Pedro Vaquer Comas’s NADIR was 2nd. In Race 2 it was NADIR’s turn to take the bullet and PEZ DE ABRIL was 2nd tying them at 3 points. Jacob Wallenberg and REGINA 2.0 (SWE) placed 3rd and 6th and sit in 3rd place with 9 points after one day of racing.
“The level of sailing here is very good,” stated Meseguer. “The first race had very steady wind; the second race was like a lottery with dramatically diminishing wind to 5-6 knots and shifting 20 degrees at times,” he added.
Pedro Vaquer Comas was beyond pleased as this was his first 1st place ever. He said, “I’ve sailed a lot of IRC and ORC, but to cross the line and know at an instant exactly where you stand is great, rather than having to wait while results are calculated. He went on to say, “You might have an idea of where you are, but nothing is certain until the results are posted.” He added, “I have had this team for the season and it requires a commitment from them to set their calendars for the regattas.”
In the BMW ORC 1 Division Christophe Wargny and ZAPPY S. are currently in 4th Place and Diana Corominus Guerin and Jordi Costa are in 6th with BLUE.
Racing continues through Saturday.
