"Blazer" and "Quintessence" Place 1st and 3rd at the American Yacht Club Fall Series in Rye, NY
After two consecutive weekends of racing and 11 completed races, Chris Culver’s (CT) BLAZER proved she was the rightful winner of the IRC Division with 1-3-3-3-3-2-1-2-2-1 finishes for a mere 21 points. She also won the Cynosure Trophy awarded for the Best Performance in IRC in the Fall Series. Amongst her laurels, in 2014 BLAZER had been awarded the Roger Sherman Trophy for the Best Performance in the combined American Yacht Club Spring and Fall Series.
Roger Widmann (NY) and QUINTESSENCE had been holding on to 4th place until the final day of racing. With two races remaining, she saved her best for last and took the bullet in Race 10 and was 2nd in Race 11. She beat out a Custom Mills 43 to take 3rd for a podium placement and with 38 points she was only one point behind the 2nd place finishing Swan 45.
Widmann noted, “The wind was between 7-8 knots in Race 10 and had diminished to 5-8 knots in Race 11. We spent the entire regatta chasing Chris Culver around the course. There was a variety of conditions this weekend ranging from 18-23 knots against the tide on Saturday making for extra difficult conditions. Sunday it was so light the Race Committee could only complete two races for a total of eleven in the series”. He added, “Credit is due to our Tactician, Doug Lynn, who got us very good starts and had us on top of the shifts. My hat is off to the QUINTESSENCE crew who performed extremely well in managing tight boat-to-boat maneuvers”.
John Hele’s (NY) DARING finished in 6th. Her best results were Races 7 and 9 where she placed 2nd in both.
