"Daring" Wins the Around-the-Island Race in Newport

Today marked the start of the 163rd NYYC Annual Regatta presented by Rolex.   Eight Swan 42s competed today in the almost 20nm Around-the-Island Race around Conanicut Island.  The start in the bay took the fleet out to Beaver Tail where the winds were 16-18 knots before heading to the Jamestown Bridge.

John Hele's DARING finished 1st with Royal Thames Yacht Club's MUTINY, helmed by John Greenland, 2nd, and Ken Colburn's APPARITION was 3rd.

"It was a beautiful day with close racing as always with the Swan 42.  MUTINY (Royal Thames Yacht Club) led most of the way around the island with DARING and APPARITION in second and third respectively", said John Hele.   "Close to the Newport Bridge and near the finish line a wind shift allowed DARING to jump to the lead and finish just ahead of MUTINY.   It was a great day thanks to the NYYC", he added.
In addition to the First Place award, DARING along with Stephen Murray's WARRIOR, won the Rolex Cup for the two-boat team best combined score in IRC from a club other than the NYYC - the winning club of the Imperial Poona Yacht Club.
Linc Mossop's THE CAT CAME BACK finished 2nd in IRC 3.
Racing continues Saturday and Sunday with windward leeward races.

Swan 42s Place Well at Sail Racing PalmaVela and American Yacht Club Spring Series

Five Swan 42s competed this past weekend in ORC B at Sail Racing PalmaVela in Palma, Mallorca (ESP).  For some owners this was their first regatta with their boats.  In a 19-boat fleet Jose Maria Meseguer and PEZ DE ABRIL placed 2nd with a 5-1-4-1.  Tying on points but finishing 3rd was Dominique Luna Tudela and MAGICAL with a 2-4-2-3.  Placing 5th was Pedro Vaquer Comas and NADIR with Barry Sampson's LONG ECHO and Diana Corominas Guerin's BLUE finishing in the top ten.

Next up for the European fleet is the Giraglia Rolex Cup inshore series.  This event will be held in Saint-Tropez (FRA) from June 11-17.

Across the pond the American Yacht Club Spring Series was held in Rye, NY over the past two consecutive weekends.  After 9 races scored John Hele's DARING took 2nd Place in IRC with a 5-2-2-6-2-4-1-4-1.  While Hele helmed the boat the first weekend, Brad Read was the Alternate Helmsman the second weekend with Dave Jarvis as Tactician.

Chris Culver's BLAZER was 4th after missing two races with a torn main.  Roger Widmann's QUINTESSENCE was 10th plagued by technical issues and only able to complete four races over four days of racing.

The Americas next One Design competition is the 163rd NYYC Annual Regatta Presented by Rolex, June 9-11, in Newport, RI.  For several NYYC entries the Annual Regatta will serve as one of the two qualifying regattas for the one NYYC entry to the 2017 Rolex NYYC Invitational Cup in Newport in September.
