"Natalia" Wins Race 7 While Nautor's Swan Celebrates Her 50th Anniversary

Day 3 at the Rolex Swan Cup brought a postponement before the winds kicked in to 17-30 knots.  Due to the late start and a wind shift there was only one race for the Swan 42s.

NATALIA continues her lead in E Class with another bullet in Race 7.  BEWILD is showing great consistency as well with a 2nd place finish, while Alberto Franchi’s (ITA) ORBIT FARR MARMO was 3rd.  PEZ DE ABRIL placed 4th in Race 7.

Barry Sampson (UK) and LONG ECHO placed 5th.  "I was a bit disappointed in myself today, but certainly not with the crew.  We were last around the windward mark, but ended up 5th in a very competitive field of boats, some of which are very well practiced."  He added, "I am very excited about representing Itchenor Sailing Club (GBR) again next year at the NYYC Rolex Invitational Cup.  Itchenor may be one of the lesser known clubs in the UK, but Ian Walker who won the Volvo Ocean Race is a member."

The evening was the spectacular Owners’ Dinner hosted by Rolex on the rooftop terrace of Yacht Club Costa Smeralda surrounding the pool. A Michelin-inspired menu created by a visiting chef had been created in celebration of Nautor’s Swan’s 50th Anniversary.   TARANTELLA, the very first Swan built 50 years ago at the factory is participating in the Rolex Swan Cup to commemorate this special occasion.

Highlights of the evening were the performance of Mezzosoprano Cecilia Bartoli and a pianist as well as a special presentation from Rolex to Leonardo Ferragamo.  Bartoli has performed at both the Metropolitan Opera (NYC) where she made her debut and a long-awaited performance at the Royal Opera House in London. Moonlight danced across the masts at the Club marina along with the lights of Old Porto Cervo making for the perfect setting.

Day 5 dawned with a building wind forecasted.   While there was a postponement ashore, the coastal race for today was eventually cancelled.

NATALIA Wins all Three Races Today at the Rolex Swan Cup

A stiff breeze was the order of the day for Day 2 of the Rolex Swan Cup and three races were completed.  The races were tough with chop and required a great deal of concentration from all the crews.

NATALIA won all three races giving good indication Natalia Brailiou (ROU) could be a 3-peat of the last two Rolex Swan Cups.  In spite of having to do a 360 at the first windward mark in the third race, she still won the race.

“I am very happy to be back at the Rolex Swan Cup as I have not sailed the boat for two years since the last Rolex Swan Cup.  She added, “It is always the entire team working together that makes it successful.  Good upwinds and keeping the boat speed constant are important.”

Iacopo Lacerra (ITA) and BE WILD had another great day with 2-2-3 finishes.  Jerome Stubler (FRA) and RAVING SWAN finished Race 6 in 2nd place.  Another top finisher was Massimo de Campo (ITA) and SELENE-ALIFAX with 3rd and 4th place finishes in Races 5 and 6 respectively.

Bernarda Franchi (ITA), sister of Alberto Franchi, sails with her brother on ORBIT FARR MARMO.  As with BE WILD, this is the first time either has sailed the Swan 42 in Class One Design.

“We bought the boat last year and this is our first very important race in One Design.  It is a beautiful experience and we hope to be back in two years,” said Franchi.

Jose Maria Meseguer’s (ESP) PEZ DE ABRIL who had been doing so well yesterday was forced to retire from Race 1 and the remainder of the races for the day.

This evening was the One Design Dinner sponsored by Nautor’s Swan at a lovely hilltop restaurant in Porto Cerrvo.  It was a great opportunity for new owners to meet other Class members and share their enthusiasm for the great racing venue.
